World War 1 Exhibition and Talks

If you want to find out what it was like to live and serve some 100 years ago during the First World War, then go along to the ‘Valley at War’ event, taking place on Saturday 16th April in Bolsterstone Village Hall from 10.00 to 4.00.
Bolsterstone Community Group secured a small grant from Heritage Lottery Fund to explore life in the Ewden Valley area between 1914-1918, focussing particularly on those commemorated on the war memorial, which sits just inside the churchyard. The group is holding an Open Day to showcase its findings. There will be a series of short illustrated talks starting at 10.30 on topics including Stocksbridge in WW1, medical matters, and stories about local heroes. Visitors will be able to view local photos, WW1 memorabilia and displays. There will be an opportunity to get help with military and family research together with information about the life and death of those who served in the war from the area.
We would be particularly interested in hearing from any reader who had relatives/friends living in the local area during WW1. There will be free refreshments available throughout the day. Work continues until August when another event is being planned.
